
In order to diagnose tree health, we must first look at the physical properties of trees in general.
The outer layers, the 'Biological Tree', are where water is being transferred and living tissue is growing. The inner heartwood, the 'Mechanical Tree' , makes up the interior structure of a tree.
It is important to understand this concept of a 'tree within a tree' (Dr. Alex Shigo) when considering the condition of a tree.
For a tree that appears healthy, very full and green, could actually have a heartwood failure, and be hollowing from the inside out. Not something you would consider structurally sound at all! (see photo below)
On the other hand, a tree that may have died on the outside, could have a hardened petrified heartwood and stand stronger than ever for many years. (see photo above)
